I don't know whether to believe in destiny, fate... call it what you will. It's too subjective, too open to clauses, too differential, too philosophical to me.

Me like simple shiny stuff. Which is why I'd like to introduce something I *think* I believe in.

Serendipity.

According to wikipedia, Serendipity came from a story called 'The three princes of Serendip'. It's a name used to refer to the three main characters of a series of stories told for countless generations - generations enough for 'Serendip' to actually become 'Sri Lanka'.

Serendipity is, put very very simply, 'The discovery of what is not sought.'

Taking the three princes in their most famous story (about a camel) as an example, they found a mountain of riches as a result of their pursuit of a camel that none of them had seen.

I like Serendipity. Maybe it's because it conveniently explains why so many things happen without having to attribute it to some other divine law. It's like Murphy's law - You don't know that it exists for certain, but it just seems to in hindsight.

For me, my serendipitous encounter would be this - entering medical school and finding... and being accepted into... a group of friends I hope never to forget.

This is why I believe in Serendipity. Because it just seems so true.
